Barbara Ehrenreich asks: Is It Now a Crime to be Poor?

Writing in the New York Times as an Op-Ed Contributor, Barbara Ehrenreich asks if it is now a crime to be poor?

"IT’S too bad so many people are falling into poverty at a time when it’s almost illegal to be poor. You won’t be arrested for shopping in a Dollar Store, but if you are truly, deeply, in-the-streets poor, you’re well advised not to engage in any of the biological necessities of life — like sitting, sleeping, lying down or loitering."

Gary Burtless, Senior Fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, examines: Have the Stimulus Programs Failed?

"Before the recession began, American households saved very little. The personal saving rate was just 1.5% in late 2007. As the recession worsened, the saving rate soared. In the most recent quarter, it reached 5.2%. Critics of the government’s stimulus policies claim the surge in personal saving has undone the intended effects of the stimulus. In their view, the government’s efforts to boost the economy have failed. Is this claim credible?"
