Virginia CASH Campaign/EITC Initiative Training Needs Assessment

Under a new 3-year federal grant, the Virginia Community Action Partnership (VACAP), in coordination with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS), will be presenting a series of Webinars and Webcasts for training and information sharing.

The purpose is to build the capacity of partners and stakeholders to help low-income clients and their familes achieve economic self-sufficiency. The training is geared to initiatives that increase low-income individuals' approvals for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and enrollments in the Virginia Individual Development Account (VIDA) Program.

VACAP is asked its 29 community action agency members, Virginia CASH Campaign coalition members, and other interested organizations to assess their training needs to promote EITC and VIDA activities. Members shared their thoughts on training audience, topics and presenters, and training schedule for 2008-2009.

$23 Million In Stimulus Checks Are Unclaimed

By Chris L. Jenkins, Washington Post Staff Writer: More than 77,900 low-income senior citizens, disabled veterans and others in the Washington region have not filed to receive the economic stimulus checks sent to millions of U.S. taxpayers this spring, pushing federal and state authorities to redouble their efforts to inform more people that they are eligible.

Those unclaimed checks total more than $23 million, according to an analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Some of those people, who do not file tax returns, apparently were not aware that they were eligible for the money or did not file to get the payment.

Under the $170 billion stimulus package Congress approved to boost the economy, most taxpayers are eligible for rebates of as much as $600 ($1,200 for married couples).
