STEP, Inc. Receives $1.1 Million Loan For New Building

STEP, Inc. has been dreaming about a new building for years. Now, members are one step closer to seeing it come true. The USDA gave "STEP"… or Support To Eliminate Poverty, in Patrick County, a loan for more than $1.1 million.

Danvillians Put Sherman Saunders On The Top Of The Ticket

Danvillians put Sherman Saunders, Executive Director of the Pittsylvania County Community Action Agency, on the top of the ticket May 6. The longtime council veteran won 4,686 votes, more than 1,000 votes ahead of the second-place finisher. The story was pretty much the same in 2004, when Saunders won 5,685 votes, 845 votes ahead of second place.

US Interagency Council on Homelessness Recognizes Virginia CASH Campaign & VACAP

New River Community Action Offered Free Help With Taxes

New River Community Action’s (NRCA) VITA program assisted with filing the Economic Stimulus rebate returns for 138 qualified individuals. NRCA is a coalition partner of the Virginia CASH Campaign.

New River Community Action (NRCA) helped 190 tax filers avoid paying expensive tax preparation or rapid refund fees by providing 51 Federally-trained, certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparers at NRCA’s Floyd, Montgomery and Pulaski Area Offices. Volunteers prepared and ?led low-income individuals and families taxes for free with a savings to the tax filers of $38,000 in tax preparation fees.

In addition to the free tax preparation services, volunteers helped determine if tax filers qualified for the federally funded Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low to-moderate income individuals and families with earned income. The average EITC refund for NRCA’s VITA program was $962 with a total of $76,021 in EITC refunds.

Eleven families were eligible for the Child Tax Credit for an average credit of $1,326, with credits totaling $14,591.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Philadelphia Homeownership Center and Richmond Field Office are bringing LENDER BASICS and LENDER UPDATE trainings to Chesapeake. FHA is leading the way to a stronger housing market with foreclosure prevention, refinancing and new mortgage products. These two seminars will equip lenders with the tools they need to provide strong, safe mortgages to benefit their customers and themselves.
